In America teens celebrate their coming of age with a Sweet Sixteen celebration. Sixteen is the year that American youth can legally get their driver’s license. The amount of freedom that comes with driving is the reason that sixteen is chosen as the age for the celebration. Many parents throw extravagant Sweet Sixteen parties for their children. Frequently the child is given a car as part of their coming of age party as well.

Limo for Bar and Bat Mitzvah

If you are Jewish you will celebrate your coming of age with a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Jewish boys celebrate their coming of age at 13 years old with a Bar Mitzvah and girls celebrate at the age of 12 years old with a Bat Mitzvah. At the celebration they will demonstrate their commitment to their faith and recognize that they are now responsible for following Jewish law. Jewish boys and girls spend weeks preparing for this event.

When young girls turn 15 in the Hispanic culture they celebrate their coming of age with a Quinceanera. This tradition started in Central and South America. Here in North America this traditional is celebrated on a regular basis as well. This tradition begins with a Catholic mass where the girl renews her baptismal vows and solidifies her commitment to her faith and her family. Gorgeous gowns are worn by the 15-year-old girls for the event. Normally e is a large fiesta or party after mass where family and friends eat and dance.

The Japanese culture has their own tradition for celebrating a coming of age called Seijin-no-Hi. The second Monday of January 20-year-olds dress up in their finest traditional attire to a ceremony held at local city offices. As part of Seinin-no-Hi they receive gifts from family and friends and party the night away. This Japanese celebration has been going on for nearly 1200 years.
