Lots of people think that Detroit automakers don’t make a big enough deal about their heritage as the Motor City. People get this notion because of the beautiful museums that their European counterparts have to celebrate their history in the auto making industry and are also involved in many vintage car events and shows every year. When Motown does decide to show its appreciation, we should get excited and get involved! Autopalooza is on again and it’s in its eighth year. Autopalooza is a series of cruises, races and automotive showcases in Detroit and surrounding areas. It’s a celebration of Southeast Michigan’s automotive heritage. It kicked off the summer car season back in April, when some 20,000 people visited the city for an international eco-challenge event. By the time the end nears and September rolls around, up to 1 million people will have watched or participated in some of these events.
The Chevrolet Grand Prix & The Woodward Dream Cruise
The two biggest car shows during Autopalooza are the Chevrolet Grand Prix at Belle Island and Woodward Dream Cruise. The Chevrolet Grand Prix is presented by Lear. The track length is 2.3 miles and features the cars of Verizon IndyCar Series, the IMSA Weather Tech SportsCar Championship, the high-flying trucks of the SPEED Energy Stadium, SUPER Trucks and the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli. The Woodward Dream Cruise is a classic car event that is held each year on the third Saturday of August in Metropolitan Detroit along Woodward Avenue. This event takes up most of the avenue all the way to the State Fair Grounds within the Detroit city limits, just south of 8-mile road and is 10 miles each way. It attracts 1 million spectators in attendance each year. It’s the world’s most popular car cruise and largest one-day automotive event and will go on rain or shine. It’s all about cars cruising down the avenue, showing off, hanging out and partying, lots of entertainment and more cars! There’s no fee to drive your classic car in the Woodward Dream Cruise and no cost to watch.
