Students across the country have been starting school throughout the last month. Parents took the time to painstakingly get every item on the back to school list purchased, buy new clothes, purchase new shoes, and so much more to get their kids ready for school. Once school starts it is time for your kids to start planning their school year. One thing your high schooler might be thinking about is what they will be doing for Homecoming.
Homecoming is one of the highlights of the school year for high school students. If you are not familiar with what Homecoming is let’s start by explaining the event. Every year high schools plan a football game called Homecoming. Homecoming is a game where alumni come back home to see everyone that they used to go to school with. Homecoming is a fantastic time to catch up with old classmates that you may not see all the time.
High School Spirit Week
There are lots of fun activities that typically accompany the football game. Normally the high school student council will host a spirit week for all of the current students at the high school. Students and staff members will dress up in fun, themed outfits each day of the week to show their school spirit. Walking down the hallways during Homecoming week it is so fun to see the creative outfits that students are wearing.
Homecoming Court & Student Royalty
Another fun Homecoming tradition is student royalty. Student royalty is voted on from each grade at the school. These students make up the Homecoming court. Typically during halftime the Homecoming King and Queen are announced. The Prince and Princess for each grade level is normally announced at an assembly earlier in the day.
Before or during the Homecoming game there may be a parade. Each grade level will enter a float into the parade. Clubs and sports groups may also enter a float into the parade. The band and cheerleaders may also get involved in the parade. Some schools even do some outreach to the elementary and middle schools that feed students into the high school and include them somehow. Homecoming royalty may ride in borrowed convertible cars for the parade as well.
